The Carnelian is a translucent chalcedony with red tints from iron oxides such as hematite. It may be banded or have a solid color.
It has been used in cameos and intaglios (the opposite of cameos where the image carved into the stone and not raised). As well it is popular as signet rings.

Agate can be identified by its many bands of vivid colors. The bands of color may be white, black, red, blue, gray or brown. The are irregular in shape and can curve around. These curves are caused by traces of iron and manganese in the rock.
Agates can be transparent, transculent or opaque. Waved bands of color are often inside a geode and are best seen when the geod is cut through and the flat faces are polished.
Agate is usually cut into thin slices to allow light to pass through and are often dyed or stained.
Agate is popular for brooches, cameos as an inlayed stone for boxes and table tops.
